‘Big brothers and sisters have my back’: Benefits and risks of befriending older peers as a strategy to deal with school bullying

چکیده

Befriending ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ from older year groups was a strategy used by children to gain protection against being bullied same-age peers at school, especially in contexts, such as Chinese rural boarding schools, where spend long time with under limited adult supervision. However, it is alarming that close connections children, some cases, could give feeling of having power over their peers, leading them engage bullying. In addition, since the roles provider receiver cause an unbalanced between ones younger ones, might have experience ‘dark’ side cross-age peer relationships, exploitation, cases. Such experiences be further strengthened values ‘giving’ ‘gaining’ relationships. Therefore, based on ethnographic study primary school China, this article argues befriending contribute increasing safety school. also necessary aware potential risks associated because relation amongst caused age.
